I’ve been wanting to draw something from The Ghost Leech by needsmoreresearch for ages. This is one of my go-to fics for feel-good reading. It’s great, so if you haven’t read it yet, go do so!

There is a mention of Joly (who is a ghost) and Grantaire (who is also a ghost) teaching the ghost leeches tricks, sooo…

oh my GOSH

oh my gosh the leech is so happy

and Joly’s look of concentration

this is just unbelievably lovely, I’m amazed

*ahem* i mean spooky, joly is very spooky, and i am terrified, that’s what i meant to say, sorry ghost-joly

For somuchbetterthanthat, based on her Lesbian Pirate AU. Happy birthday. 🙂

I got the idea for this like way too late so it’s a bit of a rush job, sorry. orz I hope you like it anyway. I mean I could have waited until this evening to post this so I’d have more time to fiddle with it but idk if it would help that much and anyway I wanted to post early so you’d see it when you woke up.

(… Is it weird to give someone a picture of a bloody murder scene as a birthday gift? (Also I may have gone a bit overboard (no pun intended) with the blood… it was just so much fun to draw!))

I AM FREAKING OUT. But like IN THE BEST SENSE. This is, holy shit, I’m nearly speechless from happiness, this is the most wonderful gift I’ve ever had, dude. DUDE. You’re so the best. I love absolutely everything about this!!! also you so didn’t get over the board with the blood thing xD, I mean Enjolras did technically destroyed the jaw of a dude just a moment before, it’s gruesome x).

DUDE. The perfect look on Grantaire’s face!!! she looks so stunned and completely out of it!! And Enjolraaaas. With her COAT I know it’s just a detail but I LOVE IT and she looks so closed-off but that’s because she was so worried oh my god, god, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS A PURE DELIGHT. All the details behind, the other pirates fighting against les amis!!!!!!!! and just the background in general is wonderful too!!!!!

Also, haha, I was just innocently scrolling my dash and I see the above picture and I’m like “….wow that is very cool, pirate AU! Ladies Pirate AU!” and then “…wait a second…” and then “HOLY FUCKING SHIT” No but seriously I’m just. THANK YOU. Thank you SO SO SO MUCH this is THE PERFECT GIFT I love this AU I should write more of it at some point. Did I mention already you were the best???????

Omg, I’m so glad. :’D ♥♥♥ Oh and, yeah, I guess that destroying a guy’s jaw thing does make the blood kinda appropriate. x) Actually since I put him on Grantaire’s left you can’t even see all the splatter on R’s clothes…… oh and yes, you should write more of this. :DDD I fully approve of that plan.

Happy early birthday, my dear! I hope it’s as wonderful as you are. For a fic prompt, if you’re so inclined: Azelma, “There’s a small, growing part of her that wants to learn to like what she sees in the mirror.”?

somuchbetterthanthat:

There’s a small, growing part of her that wants to lean to like what she sees in the mirror. She comes to that conclusion on a Saturday as she gets out of the shower and stares idly at the small mirror above the sink. Right now, she thinks there’s not much to see; pale skin and freckles, with some spots on her chin still, thin lips and pointed nose and eyes so small they make her look mean. Or maybe it’s simply because she inherited them from her father, she doesn’t know.

It’s not that she particularly hates how she looks, really. It’s bigger than that. When she looks at herself, she doesn’t see herself. She sees the eyes of her father, but not only – there’s the large forehead, which is her mother, and a bit of roundness in her cheeks that never disappeared and belongs to a little girl that might as well be someone else entirely, happy and well-fed and cared for. All the rest – the slim silhouette and the fine brown hair and a mixture of annoyance and tiredness forming creases between her eyes, it’s Eponine.

Granted, Azelma hasn’t seen her sister since she ran away from home, three years ago. Perhaps her memories of her are getting mixed-up, but the point is that, even now, even far away from her and free from all the comparisons that people liked to make, Azelma has a hard time telling herself that she isn’t the badly-made copy of her impulsive and fierce big sister.

Les Amis de l’ABC | The Friends of the ABC

A reinterpretation of the 19th century illustration by Frederic Lix from Les Miserables aka the one where they all look too old to be students. See a bigger version here.

So it’s finally done! A special thanks to fivie and daisy-is-not-a-flower for the encouragement and suggestions. And to et-in-arkadia, whose post started it all.

Oh, this is fantastic! What an improvment over the original picture! 😀  And I really love the colors.

This is a fantastic improvement over that dreadful original (featuring Apejolras)! Love the palette.

The real tragedy about the barricade is that we don’t know how much is true. Victor Hugo was there at the June Rebellion, so what is fact and what is fiction? That question gives me chills because we’ll never know.

Charles Jeanne (who I think is probably actual real life Enjolras) wrote an in-detail account of the ACTUAL barricades in a letter to his sister after the fact

you can read it, tenlittlebullets translated it into English 🙂

it’s really graphic, he leaves no gory details out, just FYI if you’re gonna read it, keep TW: VIOLENCE  in mind

#how is he real-life enjolras if he survived (via metellus-cimber)

I’m so glad somebody asked this, because the answer is: when they finally ran out of ammunition, Charles Jeanne rounded up everyone who was still standing, went, “look, if we’re going to die, we might as well die fighting,” and led a suicidal ten-man charge against an entire flippin’ infantry column, armed with nothing but bayonets. The first few ranks of soldiers were so unprepared for such a spectacularly insane attack that they were too surprised to shoot. They crossed bayonets and tried to hold the insurgents off in hand-to-hand combat, but Jeanne’s swordsmanship was apparently aces, because he held off a bunch of them at once and covered his friends as they tried to breach the ranks. And once they were in, nobody could shoot them for fear of taking out their own guys.

So the last stand that the insurgents had intended as a noble suicide ended in them breaking through the ranks entirely and winding up in the next street over, outside the combat zone, going “well shit, what do we do now?” (I’m guessing the infantry column wasn’t very deep; central Paris at that point was a rabbit warren of narrow twisty streets, and assembling troops en masse for an organized attack was a logistical nightmare.) Unlike the National Guard, the army weren’t total chumps and got themselves turned around to give chase and start shooting once they weren’t at risk of friendly fire any longer… and that’s when all the civilians holed up in their houses went “no way, you’re not getting your hands on these crazy bastards” and started hurling furniture and crockery down on the soldiers’ heads. Jeanne was understandably distracted at the time, but afterwards somebody informed him that the barrage of unlikely projectiles included a piano. A piano. That is some straight-up Looney Tunes slapstick right there. No wonder Hugo went for the heroic death scene instead; if he’d stuck to real life, he probably would’ve gotten complaints that he’d wrecked his readers’ suspension of disbelief.

Anyway, someone opened an alley gate for them to shelter in and take stock of the casualties—most of them survived(!!!), but a few were pretty nastily wounded. Their host then had to lock Charles Jeanne in to keep him from charging right back out and taking on the whole goddamn army singlehanded. He probably would’ve broken down the door if the poor man hadn’t pointed out that going back out would give away his wounded comrades’ hiding place and the identities of the people sheltering them. They sat there listening to the gunfire gradually slow and go silent, and then in the middle of the night the ones who could still walk were allowed to slip away one by one at long intervals from each other. Charles Jeanne went straight home, slept like the dead for a few hours, was woken up at five in the morning with a warning that he’d been denounced and the building was surrounded, and then slipped out in disguise and managed to evade the police for four months before a former comrade ratted him out and he was arrested.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why Charles Jeanne’s letter is an absolute treasure that deserves to be available to anyone in Les Mis fandom who wants to read it. Incidentally, “how Actual Historical Enjolras survived the barricades by being too good at his suicide mission” is also one of the stories I tell when anyone asks me what the hell is so interesting about researching people nobody’s ever heard of from an obscure chapter of French history.

#charles jeanne#what a BAMF#and then he managed to derail the whole trial with impassioned noble speeches and dramatic gestures worthy of a Hugo play#while visibly dying of consumption#seriously how was this dude even real#saint merry#june rebellion#à cinq heures nous serons tous morts#1832#history geeking ahoy
